design that’s always in style

As the new year begins, I’ve read design trends ad nauseam for 2024. “Red is the new black!” “Jewel tones are in!” “Boucle is out!” It’s enough to make your head spin. I took a step back from it all and thought about design that’s timeless. What makes us feel good in our spaces and allows home design to stand the test of time? After having the privilege of being inside many of your homes and seeing what really works, this is what I’ve come up with.

wallpaper

Wallpaper works because it’s an investment that makes a statement. It can evoke emotion with texture, color, repeat, and scale. If you’re new to the look, start small with a powder bathroom or a mudroom. Covering an entire room in a classic chinoiserie or grasscloth can elevate it instantly. For those of us willing to push the creative boundaries a bit, Trove Wallpaper has fantastic papers that I’ve used in several dining rooms. Christian Lacroix and Christopher Farr also offer colorful palettes that remain staples for making a bold statement. I’m also loving Kerry Joyce Textiles for his artistic, nature-inspired papers.

meaningful keepsakes

I’m a big believer in clean lines in architecture and the open, inviting spaces they create, but it’s important to use meaningful items inside the house to make it a home. Large windows, flat roofs, and white paint can feel cold without the thoughtful integration of family heirlooms, art, and the right furniture. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on original mid-century furniture or antique pieces that work in your home, use them! They can be reupholstered with fabrics that coordinate with your space. Kristen Fagelman Design can also frame or display family heirlooms in a way that works with the design and flow of your home. I find that mixing old and new creates a timeless harmony that any homeowner can appreciate.

natural elements

We’ve all heard it again and again, but bringing the outside inside is so important! Elements like wood, stone, and natural grass ground us. Wood is sustainable, warms any room, and offers durability. Marble and quartzite are great for adding vibrant color to kitchens or bathroom counters, while giving us flexibility with beautiful backsplashes. Natural grass can be worked in through baskets, chairs, rugs, and even lighting. Natural grass chairs have a California vibe and work well in breakfast nooks and casual dining areas. I’m loving this option from Burke Decor.
